Herbal History of India

The oral history of Indian culture and medicine were recorded in the Vedas, four books which detail, among other things, holistic medical practices, valuable herbs, cultural history, poetry, and folklore. This text was the first to assert that not a single plant on earth was without usefulness.

"All the many herbs in which humans find remedy I Like Mothers gathered let them yield milk I Unto man, for freedom from harm." The Vedas, along with two later texts, (Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita) laid the groundwork for the discipline of Ayurveda, which roughly translates to "the science of life, preven-tion, longevity".

Ayurveda is an approach to wellness based on creating and maintaining an overall balance of health and well-being. This method advocates the internal and external use of herbs, attention to breathing and diet, and the practice of meditation and yoga.

Ayurveda is not dissimilar to the herbal philosophy and technique of Ancient China, and is the basis for Indian herbal medicine even today.
